Energy Reduction Principles
The UK, in common with other countries in Europe, is supplied with electricity at a nominal value of 230v. Energy companies are contracted to supply within a spread of this nominal value. Effectively this means that your supply can be anywhere between 216v (-6%) and 253v (+10%).
The higher the supply of energy the more you pay!
Local supply conditions will determine what your actual supply is, but consistent supply below 230v is extremely unusual. Optimising energy consumption is for the energy companies not only very difficult but also reduces their revenue. Most equipment is designed to operate quite satisfactory at the lower limit of this range (216v) and some equipment, including discharge lamps, were designed to operate from 195v to 210v. This voltage reduction means the lamps work to their designed optimum without any reduction in output.
No benefit is gained by oversupplying electricity to lamps and equipment, in fact the converse is true. The life of lamps and motors is reduced by oversupply and the extent of oversupply is just pure waste.
Voltage controllers (LiteMiser and PowerOptimiser) from Electric Green Ltd simply reduce the supply to the level at which the equipment was designed to operate. The direct result is that you benefit by saving over 20% of your energy costs without any noticeable degradation in performance, and of course, the environment also benefits.
Other important indirect benefits include
- reduced consumable and maintenance costs arising from the increase in the meantime between failures (MTBF) for equipment and lamps. This can mean that life time are increased by as much as 60%
- a positive contribution to reducing CO² emissions
- an improved power factor.
